Winter Storm Class Instruction

Dear Colleagues,

Due to the anticipated severe winter storm event, Rice will not hold in-person classes this Monday and Tuesday. Online classes will proceed assuming there are no power failures or other complications from the storm. If possible, instructors of in-person classes should teach their Monday and Tuesday courses online.

Instructors are encouraged not to attempt to come to campus to use their office or other facilities to teach online due to predicted treacherous driving conditions. Our highest priority is the safety and well-being of our community, so please do not take any unnecessary risks.

It is likely that some online classes will have to be cancelled as a result of complications from the storm, and that some of the in-person only courses will not be able to be taught online, even for one or two meetings. Therefore, we anticipate instructors will want to schedule make-up class meetings. When scheduling such meetings, we encourage instructors to be as flexible as possible and to take into account the many course demands already on their students. Utilizing asynchronous content whenever possible will likely make it easier to make up the days missed this week.

We hope everyone stays safe and warm throughout this event.

Kind regards,

Reginald DesRoches, Provost
