University selects director for Rice Advanced Materials Institute

Dear Colleagues,
We are writing to announce that Lane Martin has been appointed director of the newly established Rice Advanced Materials Institute. He will also hold the position of Welch Professor of Materials Science and NanoEngineering (MSNE). Lane will begin his new role July 1, 2023.

Lane comes to Rice from the University of California, Berkeley, where he is the Chancellor’s Professor of Materials Science and Engineering and chairs the materials science and engineering department. He is a faculty scientist in the material sciences division of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He also co-directs the Collaborative for Hierarchical Agile and Responsive Materials (CHARM), a cooperative research effort with the Army/Army Research Laboratory.

Lane is a highly published researcher with work in top journals including the Nature portfolio of journals, Science, Advanced Materials, Physical Review Letters, ACS Nano/Nano Letters and more. He has earned a National Science Foundation CAREER Award, received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers from the president of the United States and been named a fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Ceramics Society.

Lane has established himself as a scientific leader in his field and is the person we need to conduct the important work of the Rice Advanced Materials Institute. Lane joins an exceptional group of faculty in advanced materials across multiple schools and departments at Rice.

The institute will usher in a new era of research, education and discovery with profound effects on our community and world. It will integrate cutting-edge chemistry, materials science, machine learning and artificial intelligence with the goal of revolutionizing energy systems, sustainable water, space systems, biomedical materials, telecommunications, manufacturing, transportation and security.

The Rice Advanced Materials Institute will foster interdisciplinary collaboration and keep Rice faculty and students at the forefront of high-impact research.
