Over 600 students connected with 350 plus Rice alumni, parents and friends over winter and spring breaks during the Owl Edge Externship Program managed by the Center for Career Development. In its eighth year, the program allows students to connect with a Rice alum, parent or friend to explore a career path by learning about a particular job function, organization or industry.
Students connected with alums at TikTok, the State Department, Penguin Random House, Virgin Galactic and hundreds more. Students completed e-learning modules prior to and after their externships during which they must consider what they hope to explore through the externships as part of their pre-externship preparation and subsequently reflect on what they learned from the experience.
Prior to COVID, these externships took place exclusively in person through a typically half-day experience. Once the program became virtual, participation of both students and alumni doubled because financial and geographic barriers were eliminated. Here’s what two students shared about their experience:
“The experience was well designed. I liked the informal calls and I loved learning about the host's experiences. It really made me certain of my interest for this subject and field.” - Clara U.
“I learned about what is important while in college other than academics to kick start my career path - internships, extracurricular participation, and basically maximizing any and all skills that I have. I personally believe that the entire externship was flawlessly organized and all of my expectations were met. The hosts were very warm and welcoming and helped me understand important things during my college life. Overall, I loved the experience.” - Kush M.
Hosts also enjoyed the opportunity to give back to the Rice community. Here’s what some of them had to say:
“All the students that I have met with for externships over the years have been very professional and a joy to meet.” - Cathy H (‘86)
“My experience is that students are motivated and engaged. They are curious and look for all relevant information. It frankly flows easily, guided by their interests and needs.” - Angel S. (‘69, ‘70)
“This was a good experience for the externs to get real world insights into the world waiting for them post-graduation.” - Karl S (‘02)
On behalf of Rice students, the Center for Career Development remains full of gratitude for all of the Rice community members who have registered as externship hosts. Registration will open for next year’s program prior to the fall semester. Stay tuned on social media, @riceccd or contact externships@rice.edu for more information.
